TITLE OF POSITION: Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor of Graphic Design Communication
STATUS: Full-time

QUALIFICATIONS:

Philadelphia University welcomes applicants for a full-time Visiting Assistant/Associate Professor faculty position in the Graphic Design Communication program beginning Fall 2012. The successful candidate will be responsible for expanding students’ understanding of Branding and Visual Communication and to conduct interdisciplinary collaborations with the Marketing and General Business programs in the School of Business Administration. The successful candidate will be committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring, the practice of design, and service to the University and the broader design professions. The candidate will join a vibrant program with a proven track record in interdisciplinary and collaborative engagement across the University and with industry. Student work from the Graphic Design Communication program has received recognition and won awards in regional, national and international competitions.

The Graphic Design Communication program is part of the College of Design, Engineering and Commerce with other design disciplines such as Animation, Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Interactive Design and Media, and Textile Design—and with Business and Engineering disciplines. The ideal candidate will be someone that embraces design as artifact, celebrates process, and promotes strategic design thinking, as well as someone that shares the vision from the University’s 2008-2013 Strategic Plan that integrates Design, Engineering, and Business, a curricular initiative derived to prepare graduates to excel in their discipline and to lead in interdisciplinary, professional environments.

Candidate requirements include: minimum 3—5 years of industry work experience with strong evidence of excellent conceptual and technical ability; a track record of brand image creation and management; University or college-level teaching experience beyond Graduate Assistant or TA preferred; traditional design skills and training required; additional interactive/web design skills a strong plus; excellent communication, writing and problem-solving skills; competency (if not fluency) with Macintosh (and PC) platforms a plus.

EDUCATION REQUIRED: M.F.A. or M.S. (or equivalent advanced degree) in Graphic/Communication Design, Digital/Interactive Design or related area of focus.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include teaching (potentially) across the curriculum from freshmen to senior-year; required participation in maintaining, shaping and broadening the curriculum, as well as developing new interdisciplinary curriculum; required participation in on-going service to the Graphic Design Communication program, as well as the College of Design, Engineering and Commerce and Philadelphia University, including advising students and service on University committees; willingness to teach across the curriculum; and ability to teach in an interdisciplinary environment.
